To celebrate the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival, the Cambridge Chinese Community Centre’s ever popular Mid-Autumn Fair is returning to the Parker’s Piece on Sunday the 29 September 2019.
The Mid-Autumn Fair consists of four areas:
- Tent area: gourmet tents and several small tents for exhibition;
- Performance area: Various cultural performances, showing Chinese traditional culture；
- Sports area: the site for sports games like kicking shuttlecock, skipping rope, ball games, etc.
- Bouncy castle area: lots of fun activities for children.
Mid-Autumn Festival also known as the Moon Festival and Harvest Moon Festival. It is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Lunar calendar—essentially the night of a full moon—which falls near the Autumnal Equinox (on a day between September 8 and October 7 in the western calendar).
The festival has been celebrated since the early Tang dynasty (618–907). One of the most common ways to celebrate is by eating mooncakes, although they typically have around 800 calories a cake.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is a chance for families to spend time together. Many communities also celebrate by lighting paper lanterns, while some neighbourhoods will take part in lion and dragon dances for luck.
